Get a personal loan instantly at just 12% to 14%.

You have seen that ad. I took the offer to find out what the number really is. I applied on KreditBee with a 730 credit score and a spotless repayment history — and then I put my own loan through an IRR calculation.

₹20,500
Loan approved · EMI charged on this
₹19,339
What actually hit my bank account
42.71%
Real APR · IRR on actual cash flows

Stated rate 27.75%. Real cost of borrowing: over 42%. Here is exactly where the gap comes from.

The illusion

KreditBee interest rate: what the app shows vs. what you actually pay

Two things happen between the ad and your bank account. First, the app approves you at a far higher stated rate. Then it deducts processing fee and GST before disbursing — so you pay EMI on money you never received.

What the ad says

"Starting at 12–14%"

A best-case rate that almost nobody is offered. It exists to get you to install the app and finish KYC.

What you actually pay

42–49% real APR

27.75% stated, plus a 5–6% upfront fee and GST that quietly shrinks your principal. Always ask for the APR.

The one-line version — interest is charged on the approved amount, but the fee is taken out of the disbursed amount. That single asymmetry is worth roughly 15 percentage points of extra cost on a 9-month loan.

This is not KreditBee-specific. Every instant-loan app I have tested uses the same structure — the only variable is how big the upfront cut is.

Case study

KreditBee loan details: my real ₹20,500 offer, fully decoded

These are my own screenshots — the 9-month offer, the 6-month offer, and the charges summary. The rate quoted to me was 27.75% p.a.

Charges summary

Loan amount (principal) ₹20,500
Stated interest rate (p.a.) 27.75%
Monthly EMI × 9 months ₹2,549 → ₹22,941
Processing fee + GST, deducted upfront −₹1,161
Net amount disbursed ₹19,339

The catch

You repay ₹22,941 on money that arrived as ₹19,339. Effective principal is lower, repayment is unchanged — and that is the whole trick. Nothing in the app is technically hidden; it is just never expressed as one number.

The tool

KreditBee loan calculator: find your real APR before you accept

Put in any offer you receive. This runs the standard IRR on your actual cash flows — the money you got in, the EMIs you pay out.

Your loan offer

Used to calculate EMI (reducing balance)

Include processing fees + GST + any other deductions

Reality check

True annualised cost

42.71%

vs 27.75% stated

Monthly EMI ₹2,549
Net disbursed ₹19,339
Total repayment ₹22,941

KreditBee advertises this exact 9-month loan at 48.89% APR. Pure IRR gives ~42.7% — day-count conventions push their published figure higher still.

Method: reducing-balance EMI from the stated rate, then Newton-Raphson IRR on the cash-flow series [−net disbursed, EMI × n], annualised as IRR × 12. Want to estimate your regular loan EMI? Use our EMI calculator.

The visual

How the upfront fee bends your APR

₹20,500 at 27.75% stated · real APR as upfront deductions rise · 9-month vs 6-month tenure

Shorter tenure, same fee, worse APR — the deduction is spread over fewer months. The "cheaper" 6-month loan is the more expensive one.

The spiral

KreditBee complaints: 36% penal interest and the debt spiral risk

The repayment schedule carries a second layer of cost that only activates when you are already struggling.

36% p.a.

Penal interest on the overdue amount, on top of the loan's own interest.

4% / ₹500

Flat bounce charge, per missed instalment.

4% + GST

Foreclosure penalty — paying early costs you too.

The excuse

Is KreditBee safe or not? I tested it with a 730 CIBIL score

Ask why the rate is high and you get pointed at credit score, income-to-debt ratio and repayment history. Fair enough. So here is mine, straight from Google Pay's CIBIL report.

Factors the app says determine your loan EMI

The factors the app says decide your rate

Zero default signals, and the algorithm still returns 27.75% stated and 43%+ real. The rate is not pricing my risk. It is pricing my urgency — people who need money today do not shop around.

Our verdict

Instant loans are not expensive because they are risky. They are expensive because they are instant.

Five minutes of paperwork costs you 15 percentage points. If the real APR on an offer crosses 18%, treat it as an emergency instrument only — and check the number before you tap accept, not after. A better long-term move: build an emergency fund with our goal planner so you never need an instant loan in the first place.

Questions

Frequently asked

Are there hidden charges in apps like KreditBee? +

Nothing is technically hidden — it is disclosed but never totalled. A 5–6% processing fee plus GST comes out of your principal before disbursal, which pushes the real APR to 40–50% while the app displays 27%.

Why is my disbursed amount lower than the approved amount? +

Fee and GST are deducted before the transfer. Approved ₹20,000 at a 5% fee lands as roughly ₹18,800 — but interest is still charged on the full ₹20,000.

Will a good credit score get me the advertised 12%? +

Almost never. With 155/155 on-time payments and an Excellent profile, the offer to me was still 27.75%. The 12% figure is a marketing hook.

What happens if I miss an EMI? +

A bounce charge of 4% of the overdue principal or ₹500 (whichever is lower), plus 36% p.a. penal interest on the delayed amount. This is where the debt spiral starts.

Is KreditBee safe or not in India? +

KreditBee itself is a legitimate platform — its lending partners are RBI-registered NBFCs, so the loan is real and legally binding. What is not safe is assuming the advertised rate is the full cost. The real APR on a ₹20,500 / 9-month offer was 42.71%, not 27.75%. Read the sanction letter carefully before accepting.

Is KreditBee RBI approved? +

KreditBee is a loan marketplace, not an NBFC itself. The actual loans are issued by its RBI-registered NBFC lending partners (including Krazybee Services Private Limited). The loans are legally issued by licensed lenders, but KreditBee as a platform operates as a fintech intermediary, not a direct RBI-regulated lender.

Is KreditBee fake or real? +

KreditBee is a real, operational platform founded in 2018 and headquartered in Bengaluru. It has disbursed loans to millions of borrowers. Negative reviews on Trustpilot (1.6/5) mostly relate to recovery practices and high charges — not to the platform disappearing with your money.

What is KreditBee and who actually lends the money? +

KreditBee is a fintech app that connects borrowers with RBI-registered NBFC lenders. The app handles the application and disbursal UX; the actual loan is issued by one of its NBFC partners. KreditBee earns through processing fees and referral revenue from lenders.

Why is my KreditBee disbursed amount less than the approved amount? +

Processing fee (typically 2–6% of principal) plus 18% GST is deducted before the money is transferred. A ₹20,500 approval with a ₹1,161 fee arrives as ₹19,339 — but interest and EMI are still calculated on the full ₹20,500. This gap is the core of the hidden cost structure.

KreditBee complaints — what can I do about harassment? +

Harassment, abusive language and contacting family members all breach RBI Fair Practices Code. File a complaint at the RBI Ombudsman portal (cms.rbi.org.in) or cybercrime.gov.in. Defaulting on a personal loan is a civil matter — you cannot be arrested for a missed EMI.

Who is the owner of KreditBee? +

KreditBee is owned by Finnovation Tech Solutions Private Limited, co-founded by Madhusudan Ekambaram (CEO) and Karthikeyan Krishnaswamy (COO), headquartered in Bengaluru. The company has raised institutional funding and operates one of India's larger personal loan marketplaces.
